Brief History
Vale House is Adelaide's earliest surviving substantial residence,
and is listed on the South Australian Heritage Register and The
National Estate. Built in the first 5 years of white settlement
in South Australia, Vale House was occupied by several noted colonists
including Captain Edward Frome, and William Clark. In 1853 it
was purchased by Philip Levi,a well known and influential businessman
and pastoralist. During the following 96 years of ownership by
the Levi family Vale House became a popular centre of social activity
for the Adelaide gentry.
The spacious rooms
and elegant ballroom hosted celebrations of all descriptions,
and many a red jacketed rider enjoyed a stirrup cup under the
shade of the enormous Morten Bay Fig tree, before setting out
on the many fox hunts that began at Vale House. Vale House remained
in the Levi family until 1948 when Philip's sole surviving niece
left the property to the Walkerville Council. Since that time
Vale House has been used as boarding house, Council offices, a
kiosk and manager's residence for the surrounding caravan park,
its full heritage significance not fully appreciated until recently.
In 1999, after extensive
research Vale House was restored and adapted into four separate
self-contained luxury suites, featuring a gallery of early artworks
of colonial Adelaide, and a more detailed history of the house.
Guests can now soak up the ambience and charm of this unique historical
building and garden setting overlooking the River Torrens while
enjoying all the luxuries we expect today.
