Top Five Tips for Travelling with Pets in a Caravan and Staying at Caravan Parks
Camping holidays and staying at caravan parks are a great holiday experience, and usually offer the flexibility to be able to bring your pets along too!
Here are our top five tips for travelling with your four legged friends:
1. Do your research before booking
While lots of sites advertise as being pet friendly, it’s a good idea to check how pet friendly they make your stay. Do they charge extra for your pet to stay? Do they promote a pet friendly site, providing areas your pet can run and play freely? Do lots of other pet owners recommend the site? Knowing the answer to these questions can make or break your stay.
2. Check what restrictions are in place for pets
Some sites have rules and restrictions in place for pets. For example, with dogs, they may ask that they are kept on a leash at all times and there may be designated dog walking areas areas. For sites located near beaches, this can change depending on the time of year so even if you’ve been there before, it’s worth checking the details before you arrive.
3. Before you leave
Make sure your pet is healthy and up-to-date on all required vaccinations, particularly rabies. Speak to your vet about whether your pet should be vaccinated against Lyme disease, a tick-borne disease and discuss appropriate flea and tick control for when you’re away.
4. What to pack
Make sure you pack enough water and food/snacks for your travel time. Consider packing enough food for your pet for the duration of your trip, in case you can’t locate a store with the right pet food. Take a clean food and water bowl. Other things to pack include toys and bedding, animal waste bags and a first aid kit in case of minor cuts.
5. Keep your pet safe on site
On site, keep your pet away from campfires and hot utensils, that could cause injury. If you can’t supervise your pet, make sure they are properly confined - use a pet crate or portable fence unit. Never leave them in a closed car or caravan. Check your pet regularly for ticks, thorns or plant burrs as these can cause irritation and itching to your pet.
With a little preparation, you can make sure you and your pet have a great, and safe, holiday experience!
